Huatung Valley slow food: Ruisui milk to Yuli noodles

縱谷慢食:瑞穗鮮乳到玉里麵

7 h4 stops

Overview

About this route

Head south down the Huatung Valley from Ruisui to Yuli for milk, Yuli noodles, yokan and stinky tofu in a day. The ranch is about 21 km from central Yuli, roughly 30 minutes by car (estimated from OpenStreetMap routing); the valley's shops are far apart, so you will need a rental car or a train-and-taxi plan, and hours are best confirmed locally, ideally with a phone call in the morning.

Opening days and hours change, so check before you set out.

The itinerary

  1. About 1 h

    Stop 1: Ruisui Ranch

Dairy farming took off in the Ruisui area in the 1980s, and the ranch (Rareseed Ranch on English maps) switched to dairy cattle in 1985, selling fresh milk, cheese, milk steamed buns and ice cream. Open map data lists hours of 08:00 to 18:00; the ranch is about a 9 minute drive from Ruisui Station.

  2. About 1 h

    Stop 2: Yuli noodles

Lunch in Yuli, about 30 minutes by car from the ranch. Yuli noodles are hand-made yellow oil noodles in broth or dry, commonly with minced pork sauce, pork chop or danzai-style toppings. A 2013 noodle festival promoted 53 shops, while Chinese Wikipedia says the town itself has a dozen or so noodle sellers; none of the sources we found ranks one shop first, so sit down wherever locals are queuing.

  3. About 30 min

    Stop 3: Yokan at Guangshengtang

Chinese Wikipedia lists Yuli yokan among the town's best-known products. Light Travel's Yuli write-ups of 2019 and 2023 both name Guangshengtang (Zhongshan Road Section 2) as a local shop of sixty to seventy years selling Japanese-style yokan, with a reduced-sugar version too. A second shop, Yu Mei Xuan at 63 Guangfu Road, appears only on open map data. We found no opening hours for either, so check before you go; yokan is sweet, so buy a small bar to try, or take some home.

  4. About 40 min

Stop 4: Yuli Qiaotou Stinky Tofu

Stinky tofu on Minquan Street, about 250 meters from the yokan shop. NOWnews and Mirror Media (2025) give hours of about 11:00 to 19:00 or 19:30, so 15:00 is within them. Crisp fried tofu with pickles and sauce makes a good afternoon snack; Mirror Media puts a portion at NT$100, and you take a numbered ticket and queue.
