Overview

About this route

Five small stops between dawn and early afternoon along a short run of streets in West Central District: beef soup, milkfish congee, savory rice pudding, braised pork rice with side plates, and shaved ice to finish. Go on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, when every shop is open; most close on Mondays and Yuan Zai Hui also rests on Thursdays. Order small portions or share, or you will not make it to the end.

Opening days and hours change, so check before you set out.

Stop 1: Beef soup at A Cun (Baoan Road)

A Cun dates to 1968 and, per its Michelin listing, is now run by the third generation. It opens at 4:00 a.m. from Wednesday to Sunday (Tuesday is evening only). Three or four cuts of hand-sliced Taiwanese beef are scalded in beef-bone broth and dipped in sweet soy paste with ginger; the stir-fried beef with cabbage is worth adding. It closes early once the meat sells out, so do not dawdle.
